SEASONS IN THE SUN

After not seeing my aunt for several months, I visited her in the hospital yesterday (being hospitalized since early morning). I saw she is a lot older than what I have imagined and even looks older in her patient outfit.

I was taking a vicar who will give her an anointing for sick sacrament. My cousin said that she lost her consciousness that afternoon. When we arrived there, she looked like having a deep sleep.

The vicar put his hand on her head and tried to talk to her, but she gave no reaction, even when the vicar very gentle slapped repeatedly on her cheeks. Then he asked us to get ready to start the sacrament.

We started praying. Amazingly, on the stage when the vicar should rub her with the blessed oil, she opened her eyes and gave a smile to the vicar and then turned her face to the nun who also joined us and smile. She got her consciousness back!

We starred at each other, were stunning from what we have just seen, tears started streaming down my cousins eyes. We continued our prayer, and more surprising, my aunt could follow our prayer to Mother Mary fluently.

I believe in prayer. A sincere prayer that comes out from a clean thought and for clean objectives will be answered by Him.

Observing what was going on inside the hospital room yesterday, my head full of thoughts of a dying person. What is inside a dying person’s mind? If they are old already like my aunt, they must have already been prepared welcoming the time. But, it must be a sadness they feel inside, a sadness of leaving their love ones they know that they will go to a better place.

That thought bring my memory to a song “Seasons in the Sun”.

Do you know its lyrics? I gave you some here, that related to my thought in the previous paragraph.

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of Love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knee

Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I’ll be there

Goodbye Papa, it's hard to die
When all the bird's are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little Children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had Seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just Seasons out of time

SMILE AND KEEP ON SMILING

In physiology, a smile is a facial expression formed by flexing the muscles most notably near both ends of the mouth. The smile can be also around the eyes. Among humans, it's customarilypleasure, happiness, or amusement, but can also be an involuntary expression of anxiety, in which case it can be known as a grimace. There is much evidence that smiling is a normal reaction to certain stimuli and occurs regardless of culture. Happiness most often causes the smile to occur, though. an expression of

When seeing “music by: Charlie Chaplin” written on a score of Smile, I wondered if this is the famous comedian Charlie Chaplin or other Charlie Chaplin. Then I found out if the comedian Charlie Chaplin is also a very talented musician.

WHICH AMBIENCE WOULD YOU EXPECT TO HAVE?

Feeling not quiet well last night, but still had to join the love ones dining out. As usual if not on the mood, I am easily forget things. I did not change my camera's battery - so, please forgive me if the pictures I have here are not so clear!

We decided to an Italian Restaurant in Sanur area, one of our favorite dining places. He craved for their pizza (LOL).

We found Baracca – that is the name of the Italian restaurant- by accident last year. Being bored having Japanese food, we decided to try a cute white opened air Italian Restaurant located near the Japanese Restaurant. They put many big square pots of red and pink Crown of Torns (Euphorbia) around the restaurant, giving a nice tranquil feeling.

They extended a very good and efficient services and for sure delicious lines of Italian dishes. We found they have richer taste compared to other Italian restaurants’ which usually has already been adjusted to accommodate locals’.

Last night, since I had problem with my stomach, I did not order a
ny food. I only had hot tea and shared some pizza and agnolitti with my love ones plus a slice of bread accompanied by mushroom cooked in creamy sauce and eggplant cooked in tomato sauce – their opening dinner bites-.

Many times visiting Baracca, the only thing I did not expect for them to have is two sets of maybe 21” television installed on its each corner (see the first picture, you can see the bottom of one television). Even the sound is always turned off or sometimes set in a very low level, but for me, having those 2 sets of TV bit annoying. Somehow it drags you to its screen…. Humpfh!

I would be better having a nice Italian Music or any kind of music rather than television. And I think it is not difficult for them to have collections of Italian Music, do you know why? They serve imported mineral water from Italy!

What do you think? Which ambience would you expect to have?

NEVER TOO LATE TO START NEW THINGS

I was looking for my collection of my favorite music scores, when I found a very basic ‘How to Play Flute” books. The book was sent by a friend of my elder sister from Holland some years ago with a cassette of Berdien Stenberg flute playing. She is a well-known Dutch flautist. Seeing that book, made me challenged to take my flute again.

And last night, after so many years…….., I started blowing my flute again. I am really a beginner, but I found last night was really amazing. I did not find any difficulties like what I experienced when I finally gave up.

When taking out the instrument from its box I was so sad and my heart full of regret, since it looks shabby already. I did not take care of it for many years. Then I started to rub it and finally it gets its shiny back.

I hardly did saving to be able buying flute. I still remember, why I becoming a fans of the instrument. I was watching a jazz band performance on the television, and stunning by the flickering of the flute played by the flautist.

But unfortunately, I did not have any passion in learning it. It is not easy to get flute teacher here in my place during those periods.

Several weeks ago, a moderator of a mailing list that I join started a topic about “life begins at forty”. He got his doctoral degree scholarship on his 40’s birthday. And many members of the list shared their thoughts and experiences related to start doing things on their really mature ages.

Maybe being inspired by them, I also found ease to start practicing flute again. I hope……………..

Then……, I can say “Never too late to start new things”

MASQUERADE??

The world we are living in, full of hypocrisy and un-truthfulness. We as a human being have a negative side that we want people not to see it. We try to cover that negative sides with ways that we might think. The efforts we are making to cover our weaknesses, many times in fact drive us into hypocrisy practice.

When you become a hypocrite you will also start an inconsistency inside yourself. What you really know and feel will be different from what you finally express, which will cause painfulness that you should carry the whole time whenever you still living in falsehood.

To live in the life like that only created a mental illness inside. We can not lie to ourselves, can’t we?

Musicians never running a life in hypocrisy and inconsistencies when they are composing their music. What a musician feel – sadness, anger, un-capability, happiness, etc – will be expressed as it is. They do not put masks on their works as people wearing it to cover their real expression.

This world will be more peaceful if we can carry our lives as musicians composing their music.

STARDUST

http://muziekmuziek.multiply.com/music/item/62/Stardust

"Stardust" is an American popular song composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael with the lyrics added four years later by Mitchell Parish.

"Stardust" [the song's original title was "Star Dust", which has long since been compounded into "Stardust"] was composed and first recorded in Richmond, Indiana for Gennett Records by Carmichael's band in 1927 as a peppy jazz number.

Carmichael said he was inspired by the types of improvisations made by Bix Beiderbecke. The tune at first only attracted moderate attention, mostly from fellow musicians, a few of whom (including Don Redman) recorded their own versions of Carmichael's tune.

Carmichael reworked the piece as a slow ballad in 1929, and the same year Mitchell Parish added lyrics. Carmichael wanted to make a new recording for Gennett, but company executives vetoed the idea since they already had his earlier version in their catalogue. Bandleader Isham Jones, however, recorded Carmichael's new arrangement of "Stardust" which became the first of many hit records of the tune.

By 1932 over two dozen other bands had recorded "Stardust". "Stardust" became a standard of the big band era, covered by almost every prominent band and singer of the generation. An arrangement by Glenn Miller was very popular. Versions have been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Artie Shaw, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Mel Tormé, Connie Francis, Harry Connick Jr, Ella Fitzgerald, The Peanuts, Django Reinhardt, Barry Manilow, John Coltrane, Rod Stewart,Willie Nelson, Billy Ward and the Dominoes, and an instrumental by the Jack Jenney Orchestra featuring Jack's long trombone solo cut one year before he repeated it with a shorter solo on Artie Shaw's recording.

Some critics have called "Stardust" the finest love ballad ever written, Parish's evocative lyrics, redolent of loss and nostalgia, perfectly integrated with the phrasing of Carmichael's melody. Unusually for a popular song, the verse is both highly melodic and musically sophisticated. Frank Sinatra famously recorded just the verse in a 1961 Reprise recording, much to Carmichael's chagrin (although Carmichael is said to have changed his mind on hearing the recording).

Lyrics:
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that were apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust
Of yesterday
The music
Of the years
Gone by

Chorus:

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song.
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you.
When our love was new, and each kiss an inspiration.
But that was long ago, and now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song.
Beside the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew.
Though I dream in vain, in my heart you will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of loves refrain.

A TOUCH OF SPICE

"A Touch of Spice" is a story about a young Greek boy (Fanis) growing up in Istanbul, whose grandfather, a culinary philosopher and mentor, teaches him that both food and life require a little salt to give them flavor; they both require... A Touch of Spice. Fanis grows up to become an excellent cook and uses his cooking skills to spice up the lives of those around him. 35 years later he leaves Athens and travels back to his birthplace of Istanbul to reunite with his grandfather and his first love; he travels back only to realize that he forgot to put a little bit of spice in his own life.

POLITIKI KOUZINA is its original title. This movie is beautifully made by a Greek filmmaker Tassos Boulmetis. Much of the film is a reflection of his own life.

A very touchy movie for myself, the music also composed very beautifully, it just blended to the story.

ONE NOTE SAMBA

I like this song a lot. Firstly, impressed by its rhythm, than by the lyrics.
The lyrics reminded me of searching a true friendship.
Once you get close to somebody, you will find yourself an eagerness of coming back to her/him again.
TO WHOM WHO LOST THEIR KINDRED SPIRIT!

English Lyric:
Other notes are bound to follow, But the root is still that note
Now this new one is the consequence, Of the one we've just been through
As I'm bound to be the unavoidable consequence of you
There's so many people who can talk and talk and talk and just say nothing, Or nearly nothing
I have used up all the scale I know, And at the end I've come to nothing, Or nearly no- thing
So I came back to my first note, As I must come back to you
I will pour into that one note, All the love I feel for you
Anyone who wants the whole show, Re mi fa sol la si do
He will find himself with no show, Better play the note you know

SEE GOD IN EVERY FACE

I was sitting at one corner of a small Café near Canggu village that afternoon.

Killing time waiting for my late lunch - a crusty vegetarian pizza; I made a sketch of a stem of an orange bird of paradise with its two big leaves placed in a small natural ceramic vase.

A kind of chilled Indian music played at the background, nobody else except me, a waiter and a waitress at the café. Softly, late afternoon sunshine shining through wooden lattice giving a nice orange shadow on the floor terrazzo tile.

Finishing half of my sketch the waiter came serving my pizza, a big smile expanded on his cheerful face. Cordially he invited me to taste the pizza. I was about taking my first bite when I noticed there was a simple zinc placate of wisdom word stood on each table of the café.

The one at my table, painted with maroon paint on a bluish background was: “See God in Every Face”. I was astonished to that wisdom word of Swami Sivananda.

I started thinking deeply about the words while chewing my pizza. That wisdom word sounds very simple but has a very deep understanding. I would interpret “FACE” on that wisdom word as CREATIONS made by God in this world. It is very true…………, God can be seen and felt through His works. I can ‘see’ there is God on the sunshine that shone that afternoon. The warm feeling I felt in my heart when seeing it passing thru the wooden lattice is the sign that He is there. A truly big smile given by the waiter with no ulterior motive but just a truly big smile, gave a nice feeling inside. That is also proven that He exists.

Finally, before my pizza finished, I have got a deeper understanding of the wisdom word. If I am able seeing things with a clean thought and thankfulness, we can see God through it. A big smile given by the waiter, if interpreted as a smile of expecting tip, would not be able extending the feeling that God is there.

So, no matter what and how outside of my-self alike, as long as I keep the clean thought and thankfulness inside; we can “See God in Every Face”.

BILLY JOEL and MY DRUMMER FRIEND

It must be a coincidence. In the last two days, on my way driving to the office, the radio channel that I was listening to, played Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” at the same time (07.23) and at the same place (in front of a small traditional market).

“Just the Way You Are” is one of my favorite songs. I always like the sounds of electric piano at the introduction part. The rhythm of the drum……., Billy Joel’s voice……, I like it all!

Surprised by the coincidence, my memory flew back to the days when I still do performance. There was a drummer friend that a fanatic fans of Billy Joel. “Honesty” is the one he likes best. He has complete recordings of Billy Joel and also books of Billy Joel’s music scores.

My drummer friend is a nice shy guy, very silent, humble and a good drummer. Amazingly, the sway of his body following the rhythm of the music he played was a contradiction to his introvert character. In many performances where he played, I always noticed this and kept the smile over the contradiction in my mind.

One day during the holiday season, we performed in a concert. We played Christmas songs in medley as the closing of the concert. I was handling the vibraphone, and it was the first time I played the instrument on a performance. So, I totally put my concentration on it.

Suddenly, there was a stick flying and felt about a meter in front of the vibraphone. I was shocked, and even more shocked when I found the stick that flying was a drum stick. I looked at my drummer friend immediately and so did other players. The audience did not notice what was going on, since he still played his part with his 2 legs and a stick that he still grabbed.

He starred at us one by one. Oh my………, if I can describe his expression. It was like, “Please……………., I need your help badly! Can you take and give my stick back to me?”

We hardly behaved, trying to hide our grin and put our concentration back to line. Then……, a savior came up, a backstage officer running, quickly picked up the stick and handed it back to my drummer friend. And a very relief expression shined on his face.

We closed the performance successfully. At the back stage we let our restrained laugh out very loud. We were in tears of laughing.

I haven’t seen my drummer friend for years. I even do not know where he is now. I just hope that he is fine. Always fine…….

JUST THE TWO OF US

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And see the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you some time
And I want to spend some time with you

{Refrain}
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us, just the two of us
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us, you and I

We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted water's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not to those who wait too late
We got to go for all we know

I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
Darling, when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I want to be the one with you

...Building big castles way on high...

Just the two of us
Just the two of us
We can make it, just the two of us
Let's get together, baby
Just the two of us
Just the two of us
We can make it, just the two of us
Just the two of us
We can make it, just the two of us

The song was written by Ralph Macdonald, William Salter
and Bill Withers.

Bill Withers (born July 4, 1938 in Slab Fork, West Virginia) is an American singer-songwriter who performed and recorded from the late 1960s until the mid 1980s. Some of his best-known songs are "Ain't No Sunshine," "Use Me," "Lovely Day," "Lean on Me", "Grandma's Hands" and "Just the Two of Us".

BEING A MUSICIAN

Being a musician (now only as a hobby) has developed a very sensitive feeling inside myself. Since my childhood, I was demanded to give strong expression into the songs that I practiced, played and performed. Somehow, it blended into the way I run my life and also influenced my way of thinking too.

Beautifully composed romantic tunes such as Alexander Borodin’s Polovetsian Dance very easily put me in tears when listening to it. Not only music, colors that are painted on the sky during the time when the sun starts to set, the fragrance and colors of the flowers, the smell of the grass, rain drops, snow flakes…………….., each of them gave a various senses for myself.

Those senses can be interpreted as a line of sadness, sometimes it can be a cheer up kind of senses, some other time it becomes just silent tunes. Anything……………, it can be anything……….. Many times I can’t resist of conveying what I feel into words, and suddenly elicit a weird starring of the people you talk to. Eccentricity is the label that people will give you afterwards.

For me, there will always madness (you may read as: eccentricity) in somebody. The more difficult you find your own kind of group, the higher your eccentricity level will be.
As a musician I experienced it is not easy to get friends in the same frequency as I am.

But then, who cares? Being a musician........ I have my own world, anyway!

If you find yours, it is a big luck!

11 AUGUST 2007

11 August 2007, is a day of remembrance.

That was the day of five years being left forever by the person who influenced my life deeply.
Sweet memories since my childhood time to the day when he went back to the Creator are too precious to be forgotten.
Time moving forward very fast and I am afraid of losing those memories.
What is now available in this world, they are fading, aren’t day?
You and I…………,
Our memories…….,
Our strength……….,
They are all fading day by day eaten by the creature named TIME.

But that is not important, what important is, filling our days remain with something beneficial for our fellows.
Sharing caresses each other and spreading kindness……
This world needs help to soften its ambience……..
Too many angers and greediness flying around the atmosphere
Many people demanding for powers and even more powers they have already grabbed.......
for them to be used nothing less than to control others

Lets ask ourselves, if we have already seen what is going on next to us……….
Have we had extending our hands for those who needs us?

I’ll start today…… with a small step of giving a smile ……….. a smile of truthfulness……..

Miss you so much, Daddy!

I want to share the songs that reminded me of him here:

BE HAPPY or BE SAD?

I attended a birthday party yesterday.

Examining the party since it’s started like watching the same movie but played by different actor and actress; using different props and at different location.

But the plot of the story is all the same. Small variations may be done on the plot of the story based on the ‘leading’ player (read as: the person whom the birthday party is intended to).

Should the happy person be HAPPY or actually should BE SAD on their birthday anniversary?

I was thinking myself yesterday. The happy person of the party I attended yesterday was not young anymore. When passing my 30’s, a strange way of thinking started to develop in my mind. At night before sleep on my birthday anniversary, I noticed that my time that I will spend in this world has already reduced by a year. Seeing the person that I love sleeping peacefully next to myself while the thought came out made me sad. More elderly I am going to be, the more sadness I will feel related to this thought and the sadness created fear inside.

Last night I was reminded of one of Paulo Coelho’s wisdom thoughts.

“We are always doing things for the first time.

While we move between our source (birth) to our destination (death), the landscape will always be new. We should face these novelties with joy, not with fear – because it is useless to fear what cannot be avoided. A river never stops running.”

I am impressed to the part “We should face these novelties with joy, not with fear – because it is useless to fear what cannot be avoided. A river never stops running.”

Before falling a sleep I build a strong will in my mind for not sad and fear over things that cannot be avoided as aging.

THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC

Why do you think people writing music?

Expression can be shown in many ways. One of the easiest way is through words. But some people are facing difficulties in expressing what they feel and thought through words. These people needs other tools to do so.

They, who has their talents in music, will use melodies and lyrics. Some who talented in writing will start to write poems or books. Others.............., maybe just using their gesture as a language in expressing things.

I found a unique song composed by Jim Croce titled "I'll Have to Say I Love You in A Song".
The word "I Love You" for some people are not easy to be spoken. Shy lovers will be trembling hardly just to make the magic word out of their mouth. I don't know if Croce was also a Shy Lover.

Writing about Jim Croce, unfortunately, I am a bit late of knowing his works. I knew him by accident when looking for worldly guitarists. I found his voice and guitar tunes amazing.

Lyrics:
Well, I know it's kind of late

I hope I didn't wake you
But what I got to say can't wait
I know you'd understand
cause every time I tried to tell you

The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

Yeah, I know it's kind of strange

But every time I'm near you
I just run out of things to say

I know you'd understand
cause every time I tried to tell you

The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

cause every time the time was right

All the words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

Yeah, I know it's kind of late

I hope I didn't wake you
But there's something that I just got to say
I know you'd understand
cause every time I tried to tell you

The words just came out wrong

So I'll have to say I love you in a song

MUSICIANS and MUSIC LOVERS

Musicians don't retire; they stop when there's no more music in them.
Louis Armstrong

A Musician is a person who plays a musical instrument as their job or hobby. I copied the definition from Collins Dictionary.

What will you call a person who can not play any single music instruments but love music to dead? A Music Lover I think.

Musicians or Music Lovers has tighted their soul to the music they like. I can imagine how empty will the soul of Musicians and Music Lovers if the life they live in has no melodies and tunes.

So, it is very true, what being composed by Louis Armstrong that musicians don't retire; they stop when there is no more music in them.

What if a musician is forced to stop the music in them due to any possible reasons? How scary to just imagine that! It should be categorized as a character assasination or a suicide?

I hope the above thought is only wandering in my mind, and no one in this world experienced to be forced being separated from the world of music they love. If any, I hope by the time I published this thought, music has already brought back to their life.

I like the tune being sung by David Gates - Lady Valentine:

She's a real look
cause she's my heart
my inspiration

Lucky is the man who find the child of love
Like a haunting melody
you allowed to sing forever
She always seems to where so well with time
everybody knows musician needs somebody special
always just the same who keep the crazy dance

better around enough to know for me there's no one finer
and she's mine, she's my lady valentine

Your the music your my song
Here with me is where you belong
I need my February near
Your the rythm, your my ryhme
Keep me right into the time
And I'm so happy when you're here

Everybody needs somebody that you can be sure of
Life alone is nowhere that you want to be
sentence isnt long and hopin
' brother you've gotta choose
cause i've got mine
got my lady valentine.

SOUTH OF THE BORDER, WEST OF THE SUN

Knowing Haruki Murakami for the first time thru his work "NORWEGIAN WOOD". The cover of the book (Indonesian Version) -which reminded me to "Hinomaru" - Japanese National Flag- was very eye-catching.

Reading Norwegian Wood suddenly made me one of Haruki Murakami's fans.

Reading the second book of Harumi Murakami, I found the the truthness of Harumi in telling stories, sometimes sounds very uncover. But that is the way he is, and for me truthfullness is on top of everything.

Shimamoto, herself an only child, was cool and self-possessed, precocious in the extreme. After school these childhood sweethearts would listen to records, hold hands, and talk about their future.

Then, despite themselves, in the way peculiar to adolescents, they grew apart, seemingly for good. Now, facing middle age, finally content after years of aimlessness, Hajime is a successful nightclub owner, a husband and father, when he suddenly is reunited with Shimamoto, propelled into the mysteries of her life, and confronted by dark secrets she is loath to reveal.

And so, reckless with enchantment and lust, Hajime prepares to risk everything in order to consummate his first love, and to experience a life he's dreamed of but never had a chance to realize.

MICHAEL FEINSTEIN

Michael Feinstein started playing piano by ear when he was five. As a teenager, he played at weddings and parties in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from high school, he worked in local piano lounges for two years, moving to Los Angeles when he was 20.

Through the widow of legendary concert pianist - actor Oscar Levant, he was introduced to Ira Gershwin in July 1977. He became his assistant for six years, granting him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, which he has since performed and recorded.

Michael is one of my favorite singer - piano player. His romantic voice and beautiful tunes he played soothed your mind when you listen to his music.

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING ?

First time I knew this song was the version sung by Michael Feinstein, which included in his album Romance of Broadway. From several songs recorded in 2 CDs in that album, I just don't know why I fell in love suddenly to this beautiful song and ever since then I started to play the record over and over again.

There is an unexplained sadness that I felt when listening to this tune. That kind of sadness left a trace of emptiness in my mind which is unable to be patched. LIFE, for me is also a kind 'music'. Everybody plays their own genre, with their own pace, dynamic and rhythm.

I am, myself, trying very hard to keep my music of life playing............
