early this year, i have to fly quiet often to yogyakarta, a part of indonesia that has strong culture influence in their community daily life.
visiting yogyakarta always fill my heart with a warm nice feeling. the friendliness of the
people and the richness of their culture giving me just a perfect combination in facing the
life. somehow i feel the similarity between yogyakarta and bali - my homeland.
profusion of nature beauty and culture. intruding immensely into my soul.
for me keroncong and yogyakarta is a package, can't be separated. i found many keroncong
groups perform in many places in the city, from the street performance to the keroncong group
in hotels' stage. Some of them are really good. i found a more contemporary in malioboro street, but i failed to take the picture.
keroncong is a traditional javanese music, but it is inspired a lot of portugese music. the term keroncong, was a mimic of ukulele sounds which a must instrument in a keroncong group. they have acoustic bass, violin and sometimes flute.
talking about keroncong, it can not be avoided to also mention an indonesian maestro of keroncong. he is the late gesang martohartono or known as gesang, who composed the famous bengawan solo. this masterpiece is well known especially in japan. several keroncong songs which also composed by him such as terang bulang (full moon), tirtonadi, jembatan merah (red bridge), etc.
he was born in surakarta, october 1, 1917. the famous bengawan solo said was composed by him when he was only 23 years old (it was in 1940). he died in his hometown, in the age of 92 (may, 20, 2010).
